Xindao, as many companies in the world, transports products over the globe from production to warehouse and from warehouse to clients. This is not something that will change soon unless both production and customers are local. The aim for this goal is to measure and monitor both our inbound and outbound transportation, the methods of transportation, evaluate our transportation partners on sustainability, and consult on this subject with our customers.

For Transportation, it is clear that many parties are involved. The goal is to reduce where we can and compensate where we cannot realize (further) reduction. This way we can operate on a CO2 neutral base in 2030.

SDG 13

Xindao contributes to SDG 13 Climate Action by initiating projects to measure, reduce and compensate Greenhouse Gases, specifically CO2. We realize that CO2 is not very visible but everyone knows that too much of it impacts our planet in a negative way.

So, how do we make it visible and measurable? By having a good structure for collecting and reporting our emissions. We have chosen the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Guidance and Standards (from here on: GHG). These standards divide the CO2 collecting and reporting in three scopes which makes it easier to compare results consistently. GHG also helps us to choose the measuring boundaries and guidance on how to make reports. To reach our goal of Climate Neutral Transportation we measure several sources of our impact.

More information on the Greenhouse Gas protocol.

To realize Climate neutral transportation we measure both Inbound and outbound transportation.

We measure both inbound and outbound transportation (inbound being from China to our Warehouse in Romania, and outbound from Romania to customers). However in 2021 we included other emissions categories in scope 3 which significantly reduced the overall impact of transportation.

In 2021 transportation accounted for less than 13% of emissions, while in 2020 it was over 90%.

We involve our customers in making a more sustainable choice for the shipping of their samples. The default method is set to a ‘slower’ shipping method, which is more climate friendly for example by truck or by train instead of by air. The customer then still can change the shipping method but it requires an extra step, this way we want to encourage customers to think about their transportation impact.
